Practical example: Refurbishing of a bearing assembly for glass processing

A Franke bearing assembly with a ball ring diameter of 400mm is used in a customer-specific design in a machine for glass processing. The bearing assembly is exposed to environmental influences, such as glass dust and high-pressure cleaning agents. Despite special sealing of the housing parts, abrasion of the bearing element cannot be avoided. Replacing the race rings and rolling elements would repair the bearing.
1.     Sighting

The bearing assembly is delivered by the customer in assembled condition and is measured on the test stand at Franke for the actual recording. The bearing is disassembled to examine the condition of the bearing element and the wire bed.

2.     Diagnosis

The wire bed of all enclosing housing parts has shrunk slightly, but does not need to be reworked. The race rings of the bearing element show slight impressions of the balls. Result of the diagnosis: The bearing assembly can be completely repaired by replacing the bearing element.

3.     Feedback to the customer

The customer receives the findings report together with an offer. In discussion with the customer, the request for an additional lubrication hole for easier maintenance of the bearing arises. This additional revision is carried out together with the repair.

4.     Maintenance

The suitable bearing element is manufactured, the lubrication hole is made and the fully assembled bearing is shipped to the customer. Before this, the date of the retreading is stamped into the outer ring of the bearing so that it can be assigned at a later date.

5.     Customer feedback

The customer installs the bearing and puts it into operation. In a very short time they have received a bearing assembly – as good as new, saving costs and valuable resources.
